About Downtown San Antonio

Now the eighth largest city in the United States, San Antonio captures the spirit of Texas, wisely blending its history and tradition with progress and amusement. Amidst the busy downtown district lies the famous River Walk or "Paseo del Rio" with stone paths bordering both sides of the San Antonio River as it winds through the city. The River Walk stretches almost two and half miles and offers European style sidewalk cafes, great shopping, live entertainment and quiet, park-like areas. Rio San Antonio Cruises, the river boat transportation system, provides a fun-filled way to sight see and travel around the River Walk. For history buffs, San Antonio is a mecca. The city was founded in 1718 with the establishment of the Mission San Antonio de Valero, a landmark that is now known as The Alamo. In 1836, 189 defenders fought to protect the mission against 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days during the Texas Revolution. The Alamo is now a shrine and museum. Additional historic destinations in downtown San Antonio include:

  • La Villita, one of the original settlements for Spanish soldiers and San Antonio's first neighborhood, is now a bustling art and craft gallery district with plenty of shopping and dining.
  • The San Fernando Cathedral, established in 1731 and built by Canary Island settlers, was the first parish church in Texas.
  • Market Square, the largest Mexican marketplace outside of Mexico, offers authentic crafts such as leather goods, paper-maché, blankets, apparel, pottery, jewelry and an assortment of other interesting regional products found in the many colorful shops.

If fun is your destination of choice, downtown San Antonio provides the following diversions and more.

  • Louis Tussaud's Plaza Wax Museum and Ripley's Believe It or Not! – Two exciting attractions located under one roof.
  • The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum is unlike any museum you've seen in the whole world, featuring more than 1,200 trophy mounts of over 520 species of animals from Africa, Asia and North America. You can also belly up to the bar in the old-fashioned saloon-turned-café and browse the Curio Store, "The Worlds Oddest Store".
